It’s that time of year, when you pack away the knitwear, swap your winter coat for a lighter jacket and think to yourself ‘I need a whole new wardrobe’. But before you go on a late night online overdose, have a look at my handy (and very catchy titled) ‘Top 10 pieces to add to your current wardrobe all under £100’. Credit cards at the ready? Let’s go…
- THE JUMPSUIT – For one, they make getting dressed in the morning as fast as a Formula 1 tyre change. Secondly, They’re sooo versatile, I have this Topshop one and wear it over t-shirts, thin knitted crew necks, frilly blouses. It’s one of those pieces whereby if you change what you wear it with, it becomes a completely different look.
2. THE PAPER BAG SKIRT
– It’s actually not just skirts, you’ll see it on shorts and trousers too, this kind of scrunched together belted waistband. It’s ‘oh so SS17’
as they say in fash-land. High-waisted and midi lengths are key which is great for Mum’s running after little ones, sitting down at play groups and not flashing your Mum bum (For more on Mum bums see here
). Next have some great styles like this one
and also an amazing striped one too – with pockets!
3. THE BIG EARRING – H&M
and J Crew
kicked this off on the high street with some amazing tassel styles and floral styles. This pair from Mango seen here
, are great as they can be worn day or night. The key with big earrings is, wear them with a t-shirt, jeans and a flash of red lipstick and you’ll look like you’ve made a massive effort. Zero time, maximum style. Boom!
4. YELLOW –
It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but there’s a whole load of it around. And judging from the press shows I’ve been to it’s going to be a key colour this Autumn/Winter too (dare I mention A/W yet?!) Try not to automatically think ‘I can’t wear yellow’ there’s lots of different shades from canary to mustard available now so find one that suits your skin tone.
5. THE BACKLESS LOAFER –
Hurrah! Another fashionable flat. Big heels are still on the back burner this summer, it’s all about the backless loafer. Or ‘Bloafer’ as some fash types are calling them. They’re pretty much smart slippers so for that reason, I’m in!
6. THE SILKY NECKSCARF –
I’m a big fan of this trend. Yes, you take the risk of looking like a flight attendant on their way to the airport but styled correctly it can be just the thing a plain-ish outfit needs. Marks and Spencer’s had an amazing selection to give away as the press gift at their AW17 press day so expect lots in store from them come September. The key is to keep everything else simple, wear it with a t-shirt, a round neck sweater or a simple dress.
7. DRESSED UP DENIM –
Think denim with details. New Look have done a great denim jacket with a frill across the back seen here
, also Whistles ‘Sigrid’ Jumpsuit and this tie sleeve denim jacket from Studio by Preen all tick the box.
£60 Studio by Preen for Debenhams.com
8. GINGHAM –
It’s not my cup of tea to be honest but it is a major trend this summer so it can’t go unmentioned. I actually love this matching set from Jigsaw but the smaller rockabilly style will not be making it into my wardrobe this season.
Top £79, Trouser £98, jigsaw-online.com
9. WIDE LEG TROUSERS –
The more awkward length the better; on the ankle, just above, just below the knee. They can make shoe choices complicated but as it’s summer, you can’t really go wrong with a minimalist sandal. This pair from Mango look soooo comfy (all about the comfort me) and are a welcome break for if like me, you live in jeans.
10. STRIPES –
Unless you haven’t been near a shop or magazine in the past year, this last one won’t be a surprise to you. Stripes are always
around for summer, but SS17 see’s them covering more tailored shirts with either origami folds or super-sized sleeves. If you don’t want to invest then just raid your other half’s work wardrobe.
