UNDER COVER

Your coat usually is the first thing people people notice about your outfit, so getting it right is key. Even more so, when you’re expecting, the cut has to be right as obviously you don’t want to feel like you’re adding bulk when you’re already feeling big.

Here are a few basic rules to look out for:

  • Look for waterfall style or unstructured fabrics which will fall over and flatter your bump
  • Choose one which has detail to draw you in, eg a belt or drawstring
  • Go for a slightly longer length than you’re used to to elongate your figure. Mid-thigh to knee length is ideal
  • Go for black or a neutral tone like camel or grey. Bold colours and prints won’t be as flattering when you’re expecting

My favourite is this waterfall style from Asos. It’s perfect if you’re still working up to your due date as it could be smartened up easily for work but it’d also look grey with a pair of trainers and a chunky knit at weekend. It comes in grey and a really nice berry colour if you want something a bit different. I found it so hard finding any which were anything other than black, navy or grey.

And here’s the best of the rest. If there’s one you like, think about investing sooner rather than later as the choice out there isn’t endless, which is madness considering your coat is the one item you’re guaranteed to wear every day throughout winter!
